The dirt, plants, and animal’s breath, discharges carbon from theâ terrestrial biosphere back to the climate. Next in the cycle, creatures (living life forms) eat the plants from land or sea, and the predators eat the creatures that ate the plants. Idealised love in the Portuguese and The Great Gatsby

Romanticized love in the Portuguese and The Great Gatsby Free Online Research Papers Elizabeth Barret-Browning’s ‘Sonnets from the Portuguese’ and F. Scott. Fitzgerald’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ both reflect, in conceptual style and fluctuating settings and components, the experience of glorified love, expectation and mortality. The components utilized by Barret-Browning and Fitzgerald, contrast in their portrayals of these topics through different scholarly gadgets, two of which are ‘points of view’ and ‘motifs/symbols’. Barret-Browning’s work succession represents an intricate development of feelings as the artist travels through distress, self uncertainty, energy, dread, and eventually significant invigoration and satisfaction, even disregarding the fretfully waiting contemplations of her own demise, though, ‘The Great Gatsby’ follows the story of youthful Nick Carraway, an apparently unadulterated man from the West, who chooses to travel to New York to bring in his cash in the stocks and securities advertise. In New York, he is met with an account of affection, desire, infidelity and murder; it is a recounting the passing of the American Dream, and the ruin of the individuals who endeavor to arrive at its deceptive objectives. ‘The Great Gatsby’ is a novel that happens during the thundering twenties, or a time also called the Jazz Age. A period of preclusion and experimentation, the novel depicts both the mayhem and loss of ethics that numerous during that time experienced. In ‘The Great Gatsby’ Fitzgerald selected a mind boggling structure and a controlled account perspective, consequently giving the novel a more noteworthy demeanor of authenticity, written in a restricted first individual point of view, with Nick Carraway filling in as the storyteller and the main genuine voice. This intentional incorporation powers the peruser to encounter the occasions in the novel, direct, furthermore, Nick is mindful so as not to tell the peruser things he himself doesn't have the foggiest idea about, this is one reason that the novel is so persuading, Nick is by all accounts the main discerning individual, and he is the one transferring the occasions to us. In spite of the fact that Nick ma kes an association with all the significant characters all through the novel, there is no preferred association over with that of Gatsby, he becomes Gatsby’s’ friend and with this is the change in Nick’s feelings, just as the manner in which he portrays the novel. Scratch is in a general sense an audience to and eyewitness of Gatsby and his reality before he is a storyteller. Before he can reveal to Gatsbys story, Nick suspends and enters Gatsbys world, tolerating his terms of talk. It is definitely by articulating the two his confidence and his uncertainty about Gatsby that Nick turns into a model for the peruser notwithstanding being an essayist and narrator. As Gatsbys state of mind and character changes all through the novel so does Nicks perspective on him, in this manner influencing the perusers viewpoint. Gatsbys brilliant and understanding grin is the sole trademark about him that permits Nick to blur all through his steadfastness and love for Gatsby â⠂¬Å"There was something ravishing about him†. Having Nick as the storyteller gives an alternate point of view on what he assembled from the circumstance. Where Gatsbys story needs narrating quality Gatsbys very expressions were worn so tattered that they evoked no image† an open door is introduced to Nick to fill in Gatsbys vacancy with melodious exposition, his nonappearance with impeccable representations, and his quietness with words for the sentiments that Nick envisions his saint more likely than not felt. With Nick as the storyteller we can weave through the many-sided lives of the characters. The thought of glorified love is introduced through the relationship of Gatsby and Daisy, or rather, Gatsby and the possibility of Daisy. Gatsby assembles a picture of Daisy speaking to bliss and love. The time between his induction and return propagates this psychological picture. Despite the fact that Daisy doesn't match the hopeful picture Gatsby has built up, he can't see past the delightful hallucination. This speaks to the misrepresentations of an alleged single dream to suit all individuals, and carry joy to all who seek after it. Gatsby accepts he is looking for joy and love, however his excursion is tainted by the realism and irreverent way of life present in Fitzgeralds time. Similarly as the Dutch mariners previously set eyes on the new green bosom of the new world, Gatsby sees this otherworldly idealism in the green light-a theme in the novel. The passing of Myrtle and the idea of mo rtality is spoken to through Nick’s utilization of expressive language, he states â€Å"where Myrtle Wilson, her life viciously quenched, bowed in the street and blended her thick dull blood with the dust†, this outflow of life’s sad end here is supplemented by Nicks utilization of symbolism, we are left with the crude picture of Myrtle lying on the floor in dislodged desolation distinct message to perusers that life isn't never-ending and everlasting. Expectation is portrayed through Gatsby’s pursue of the American Dream, he doesn't rest until this is at last satisfied, it never turns out to be genuinely acknowledged and he winds up dying of his life for it. Gatsby is blinded by the dreams that remain among him and joy. Gatsby sees Daisy to be his joy, yet Daisy isn't. Fitzgerald analyzes the American Dream via examination, through the intelligent storyteller. In spite of the fact that the standards of the optimistic dream despite everything exist, featu red by Gatsbys desire and drive to develop himself, the ethical quality behind the fantasy has been subbed by cash, bringing about debauchery, defilement and particular class divisions between individuals. Fitzgerald speaks to the defilement and the destruction of the first, hopeful American Dream with the passing of both Gatsby and Wilson-two men who get by, and endeavor to better themselves with new cash. Gatsby anyway was baffled by his conviction that cash could get him satisfaction. The two of them have the endowment of expectation, however the set up request squashes them, he had a sentimental readinesssome elevated affectability to the guarantees of lifeit was a phenomenal endowment of expectation The Victorians followed the Romantics in having faith in the association with the arrangement of recovery, reestablishment and reuse. Barret-Browning’s works offer Victorian standards of marriage being the ‘proper’ approach to reaffirm love. While Barret-Browning’s recently discovered love gives the driving force behind the Sonnet succession it likewise, for the Victorian peruser, encapsulates the suitable verse for ladies to compose, in light of the fact that, it indicated a lady in her best job adoring and communicating assessments of affection. The artist speaker is the subject (oppressing) and the outcome is a scholarly investigation of affection and the assessment of the fantasy of an adoration association, which isn't changeless, endless and unrestricted. The writer endeavors to look past all that and basically produces all inclusive topics about mankind using language and symbology. Barret-Browning effectively restored the type of the Italian piece c reated by Petrarch in the fourteenth century and furthermore grows customary shows of such a structure to incorporate female variety that was at this point inconspicuous. Barret-Browning’s exact utilization of this inflexible since quite a while ago settled manly structure permits her imaginative ladylike deviations to rise. Normally the speaker of the work is a male, commending a quiet, or missing female object of love, here, in any case, the female article is in actuality the speaker of the sonnet and a participator instead of an eyewitness. She isn't ‘golden’ or ‘lovely’ yet rather dull, sick, and near death. All through the work succession love is depicted as constantly changing the individual or individuals encountering it, as though it were a sort of cure and treatment. â€Å"I love thee to the profundity and expansiveness and tallness My spirit can reach, when feeling far out For the parts of the bargains perfect Grace.† Sonnet LXIII. The language of this theoretical picture depicts love to be unconfinable. This is underlined by â€Å"when feeling out of sight† as the picture of the affection is depicted as being further that can really be seen which emphasizes the unlimited picture of adoration. The beautiful voices’ â€Å"soul† adds to the this picture as a spirit isn't an article which can be contained inside the body as it most likely is aware no limits, thus the depiction of adoration can be seen as interminable. This picture additionally delineates the size of adoration as the language of â€Å"depth and expansiveness and height† shows how tremendous the affection the lovely voice feels. The structure is a crucial instrument to the artist when depicting affection and connections in the sonnet. The sonnet its elf is written in measured rhyming and it is this auxiliary point that upholds â€Å"depth† and â€Å"breadth† and â€Å"height† to be verbally pushed. This implements the possibility of the unlimited limits and the greatness of adoration and connections inside this sonnet. The complement of these words features them inside the line making them watchwords and stand separated from it. Another auxiliary point is the utilization enjambment; this can feature numerous parts of affection and connections, which are attempting to be passed on. The enjambments of the lines add to the depiction of adoration knowing no restrictions at the two enjambments. The absence of accentuation additionally fills an auxiliary need â€Å" I love thee to the profundity and expansiveness and height† and repeats the vast picture of affection, as the accentuation can't upset the line as is prolonged. Piece XIII advances the topic of â€Å"can language speak to the experience or is it only a reverberation of experience?† The work starts with a rankled refusal to articulate the estimation of adoration, at that point changes into a failure, in having the option to grasp the human experience of affection. The sonnet utilizes conventional ladylike generalizations to communicate the estimation of adoration. Her ‘woman love’ be

Bipolar Disorder Illnesses and Conditions - Free Essay Example

In todays society, there has been an influx of talk and awareness being brought forward about mental illnesses and disorders†one of them being bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is commonly expressed in age groups from adolescents to senior citizens, severely impacting the lives of many. Bipolar disorder is a disorder that is characterized by mood swings and manic episodes. It is unknown what the cause of this condition is, but it is commonly believed to be caused by a combination of genetics, environmental factors, and altered brain chemistry. About 2.3 million American adults suffer from this illness with about one percent of people over 18 years of age. Bipolarity does not only affect the sufferers, but it affects those surrounding the victims, thereby leaving an impact on todays society. In America, more people are being diagnosed with bipolarity than in decades past. There is a significant backlash against the diagnosis of bipolarity (Bipolar Disorder). Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depression, has two main stages: manic episodes and depressive episodes (Mood Swings). According to Ken Duckworth in Depression Sourcebook, mania and depression both include a range of symptoms ranging in severity. Mania is defined as a heightened state where a persons mood is elated and happy or irritable and unpleasant. During a manic episode, patients may experience increased energy, rapid speech, risk-taking, and impulsive urges. At the most severe, bipolar patients may engage in risky activity, sexual indiscretion, and substance abuse as a result of the impulsiveness. Depression is a state of prolonged sadness. During a depressive episode, the bipolar may experience a sharp decrease in daily energy, inability to focus, and change. At the most severe, the patient may experience suicidal thoughts and be unable to sleep, eat, or leave their bed. These episodes normally occur in consecutive periods, but, in a mixed state, the symptoms of mania a nd depression occur at the same time. Frequent episodes of illness within a year is known to be bipolar disorder with rapid cycling (pp. 33-34). According to Jerrold B. Leikin and Martin S. Lipsky in their article Bipolar Disorder from the American Medical Association: Complete Medical Encyclopedia, there isnt a known cause for this illness. Genetic inheritance of bipolarity may be a factor, as a person who has a parent or sibling with the disease is more likely to suffer from it than a person who lacks a close relative with the disorder. Bipolar disorder is equally common in men and women, where men first experience hypomania or mania, and women first experience depression. A woman is more likely to have a manic-depressive episode after the birth of a child, worsening days before starting her menstrual period (pp. 239-241). To treat manic-depression, the Depression Sourcebook states: While there is no cure for bipolar disorder, it is a treatable and manageable illness. After an accurate diagnosis, most people can achieve an optimal level of wellness. Medication is an essential element of successful treatment for people with bipolar disorder. In addition, psychosocial therapies including cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, family therapy, and psychoeducation are important to help people understand the illness and to internalize skills to cope with the stresses that can trigger episodes. Changes in medications or does may be necessary, as well as changes in treatment plans during different stages of the illness (p. 34). Following the diagnosis of bipolar disorder, victims are usually prescribed drugs such as antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, and antidepressants to stabilize moody episodes. Antipsychotics are drugs used to treat psychosis, a symptom of bipolar disorder. There are two generations of antipsychotics. The first-generation antipsychotics may be linked to causing depression whereas the second-generation does not appear to be associated. Anticonvulsants are drugs used to treat seizures and typically treat epilepsy. Antidepressants are drugs used to treat depressive disorders. The use of antidepressants, however, in bipolar disorder is very controversial. Several studies found that tricyclic antidepressants may cause the patient to experience more manic episodes. Antidepressants are also linked to rapid cycling, which can be treated by discontinuing antidepressants. There is a little known effect of antidepressants in bipolar and unipolar patients, and they may, instead, cause mood-destabil ization. Another important investigation of the drugs of bipolar disorder diagnosis is the effect of combined use of antidepressants and mood stabilizers. When the drugs are used together, patients, rather than experiencing fewer episodes, are more likely to fall into rapid cycling (Recent Advances p. 423). In addition to pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy is a commonly prescribed treatment. If the treatments are followed correctly and consistently, there is a great success rate. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps the patient develop their negative thoughts and behaviors into being less harmful. Therapies that are focused on family work on communicational and coping strategies within families. In the most extreme cases, patients may need to be hospitalized for their safety as a result of psychosis, risky behaviors, or thoughts of suicide (Calistro). Manic-depression not only affects the patient but the patients family, friends, children, spouse, and others as well. In E. Fuller Torrey and Michael B. Knables book Surviving Manic Depression, Families are like mobiles When one member develops mental illness, it sets the whole family mobile in motion and affects each of its parts. An infected individuals family will feel a sense of loss, while others outside of the family, may only see the persons successes or public life. The reality for the families, however, is much different. Typically, families will also build anger and resentment in addition to the feeling of loss in a member of the family. Families must give up their personal time to care for the patient, indefinitely. The patient might also take up much of the financial resources, making it difficult for the families to live as lavishly as they might like to. Siblings to a manic-depressed individual will face similar issues, if not more. At a school-age, children are quick t o stigmatize other children for being abnormal. When kids value their peers opinions, this creates shame and added resentment. Siblings might also be forced to take unwanted responsibilities because of the need for increased maintenance of the patient. Bipolar disorder has a lasting effect on everyone involved (pp. 283-291). In conclusion, bipolar disorder is a mental illness that has physical repercussions. Although life as a manic-depressed patient is difficult, it is manageable through medicinal and therapeutic treatments. The effects of manic-depression, however, treated and untreated, may have severe effects on the patient, as well as on those immediately involved with the patient; these effects may be relieved with new treatments and increased awareness.

October PSAT vs. October/November/December SATs for Juniors

October PSAT vs. October/November/December SATs for Juniors Hi everyone,Wow...what a busy start to the school year. Summer was too short, as always! Anyway, I haven't had time to blog much lately, but there's an important "frequently asked question" I'd like to answer for parents of high school juniors: many of you are asking whether it makes sense for your student to take the October/November/December SATs, in addition to the October PSAT. My answer is yes; your student should take as many SATs as possible, starting now. Although your student is unlikely to receive his/her highest SAT score during the fall round of tests, it's worth a shot since the College Board now allows you to send only your best score from any one test date to colleges. The fall SATs will also serve as a more accurate predictor of a student's future SAT score, because while the PSAT is only two hours long, the real SAT is almost 4 hours long! Also, if your student is currently working with another SAT tutor or taking an SAT-prep course from another company, the fall ro und of SATs (3 tests total) could help serve as a "progress report" to see if the SAT-prep program you chose is actually making a difference. Remember that most companies do not use real SATs for their practice tests, so you shouldn't trust the score improvements you see on a company score report unless your student is also taking real SATs at the same time. As an added bonus, SAT scores are returned in about 3 weeks, while PSAT scores sometimes take up to three months to be released. This will give you more time to help your student put together a SAT and/or ACT test-prep plan for the remainder of the year. (Believe me, no student wants to worry about SATs and ACTs during his/her senior year, so you're better off preparing now.)However, students should still take and/or study for the PSAT, especially if they are high scorers. High PSAT scores can help one earn scholarships such as the National Merit Scholarship, and PSAT score ranges are also used by colleges to help assemble thei r mailing lists. While colleges do not see the student's actual PSAT scores, they may ask the College Board for the mailing information of students whose PSAT scores are in a certain range. A good PSAT score will help put students "on the radar" at countless prospective colleges. In short: take both tests! -Brian

The Ghost in Kenneth Brannaghs Hamlet Essay - 1518 Words

The Ghost in Kenneth Brannaghs Hamlet William Shakespeares Hamlet is a drama which has been renound for its content and depiction of characters. Over the years, it has gone through many variations of interpretations and criticisms. One such criticism is the nature of the ghost who takes the form of Hamlets dead father. At first glance, it may be sufficient to accept the ghost as the spirit of Hamlets dead father who returns to the land of the living in order to have his son avenge his murder. However, looking deeper into the text, several unignorable signs become visible which lead us to see that the ghost is actually the devil in disguise. Kenneth Brannaghs 1997 production of Hamlet brilliantly portrays these signs of evil and†¦show more content†¦This is the first sign that the ghost has come from a place other than heaven. Horatio explains the tradition concerning spirits and the crowing of the cock: The cock, that is the trumpet to the morn, .Awake the god of day, and at his warning, .Th extravagant and erring spirit hies To his confine; and of the truth herein This present object made probation. (I:1:147-155) Then Marcellus adds to this by explaining the tradition concerning the Christmas season. He says that during this time of year, no spirit dare stir abroad because so hallowed and so gracious is that time (I:1:160,163). Because the season has come for the grounds to be sacred and holy, the Devil is cautious in its moments appearance and disappearance. When Hamlet sees the ghost for the first time, the first words out of his mouth are, Angels and ministers of grace defend us (I:4:39). This is the first sign of evil that is sensed through the ghost. The men had no idea what kind of a spirit the ghost was, whether it was sent by heaven or by hell. Horatio then shows his concern, warning Hamlet that the apparition may lead him to a horrible place and change form Which might deprive [Hamlets] sovereignty or reason / And draw [him] into madness (I:4:73-74). This gives us a foreshadowing of the events, which will take place in the play. Homeric Poem Style Draft Analysis - 1510 Words

Homeric poem style Draft Analysis Trying to write a regular poem is hard, even when the poem is the traditional and cheesy ones that professors make students do at preschool, but writing a poem like Homer did on his masterpiece Iliad is even harder. The three main things that is analyzed by Homers book is that to do his extended simile on his poem he first establishes what event is occurring and he will be talking about on his next lines, when the regular poem doesn’t need to establish that on the first moment. The second is giving extreme detail on describing the situations that happen on the poem and add some drama to the main moments of the poem. At the end he needs to remind those who are reading the book or listening back in the day about what he was talking about. On the First Time it is described a memory, where the author describes the first time he ever went to a soccer game in his life. I also decided to use this strategy on the overall poem, because it establishes t he event that is occurring in the text on the first few lines, adds as much detail as possible on the situations happening on the event and adds a bit of drama on situations that could be simply explained, so that gives a sense of Homeric style that is well used by him on his extended simile. The extended simile is used two times by the author, and they both used to give detail and a sense of what is going on the boy’s head. The second extended simile happens when the game starts, and there is a longShow MoreRelated Digression in Nikolai Gogols Dead Souls Essay1728 Words   |  7 PagesGogols masterpiece novel, Dead Souls, remains faithful to the Gogolian tradition in terms of absurdity, lavish detail, and abundant digressions. An Important Part Of Interpersonal Communication - 906 Words

Feedback is known to be an important part of interpersonal communication. It lets speakers know what impact their words are having. When others have an opportunity to respond, a dialogue is created and the content of the messages can be adjusted, or even improved. This dynamic is applied every day in health care settings. Medical professionals rely on feedback throughout their careers to enhance the quality care they provide. Patients enter clinics and emergency rooms seeking feedback from physicians about what is happening to their bodies. Together, medical staff and patients must depend on feedback to reach a diagnosis and find the best course of treatment. Physicians and other medical staff collectively examine patients: recording their vitals, taking an accurate history, and performing a thorough review of certain body systems. All of this is done based on the patients’ chief complaints. Their bodies are sending feedback signals, trying to tell them something is wrong, such as an infection like pneumonia. Patients cannot interpret this feedback themselves, so they seek medical services to further examine them. Sometimes the feedback patients’ bodies send is not very clear. Many diagnoses share signs and symptoms, so physicians should consider other factors as well. The patient may have other conditions that put them at particular risk for other problems to arise. If physicians or staff fail to further investigate in these situations, a potential for serious consequencesShow MoreRelatedInterpersonal Communication Essay1498 Words   |  6 PagesInterpersonal communication is the most important kind of communication. Criminal Defense free essay sample

When a person is charged with a crime the type of defense that they choose could ultimately determine their fate. There are many different types of defenses that exist in our criminal justice system. In this paper I will be taking a brief look at two different cases that have implored two different types of criminal defenses. I will look at the nature and types of defenses used in the cases and what evidence was used to demonstrate defense. I will describe how justification and excuse played a role in the cases and I will also be describing the outcome of each case. The first case that I will be examining will be in the case of the sleepwalking defense. On May 3, 1987, 23 year-old, Kenneth Parks, drove 14 miles to his wife’s parents house and viciously attacked them, killing his wife’s mother and severely wounding her father. â€Å"Accounts say he removed a tire iron from the car and entered the house, where he proceeded to beat his mother-in-law to death and choke his father-in-law into unconsciousness, while stabbing them with their own kitchen knife (Ramsland). In this type of defense, the defendants attorney attempts to show that the defendant IS insane and is unable to be held responsible for the crime that they have committed. Typically, there are two different plea options that are available to defendants, not guilty due to mental illness and psychologically ill.In medical terms, psychological illness can be any type of scenario that creates havoc in an individuals mind. Any individual can be affected by an illness during any given period of time and there is not any real categorization as to what could decide whether an individual is insane or not (Iodination v. Texas, n. D. ). For instance, any random person could be suffering from a psychological illness and still be fully capable of holding own a job and carry out everyday activities that we are accustomed to.A psychological illness can occur in any individual and can vary with time, along with other contributing factors. A psychological illness can generate a problem in the court room, because lawfully the courts need an obvious justification as to what insanity is. In legal terminology, insanity is a psychiatric state that makes an individual legally incompetent an unable to completely see that what they have done in regards to committing a crime. As far as legal terminology goes an individual can have a psychological illness and not be noninsured to be insane. This occurs because an individual might have a psychological illness and yet still be aware of some parts of the crime they had committed. A good example could be, an individual is suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder and the subject goes out and commits murder, this is absolutely not related to the illness in any way. In this particular case, the guilty yet emotionally ill argument can be used to lower the severity of the punishment. The defendant would still be found guilty; however they would receive a less severe punishment as well as receive mental rehabilitation. The guilty on the basis of insanity is used when the state of the individuals mind is that they had no thought as to what they were doing. Because the individual was not aware of their actions there is no reason for punishing the individual for it. Its safe to assume that the individual cant be punished and subsequently ordered to seek treatment in a rehabilitation center. Abandonment and withdrawal is defined as an affirmative defense when the attorney will try to demonstrate that the client was about to commit the crime, but instead changed thei r mind and did not omit the crime. In this case, the attorney needs to prove the details in order to back up their plea. In affirmative defense the defendant doesnt really try to prove that the prosecutors accusations are false, instead they will come up with elaborate plan and their own proof to support their side of the argument. By doing this, it usually proves a part or all of the prosecutors allegations as false. There will be times that the defendant may agree with certain information that the prosecutor provides, however, the defendant will come up with an excuse to how everyone that they did not and could not have committed the crime. In a coercion or duress case, the defense will state why the defendant did not want to commit the crime, but unfortunately had to do it due to a threat or pressure from an outside source. The pressure can be directed at the defendant or some type of hostility can be displayed towards their family members. As a result, in order to keep themselves and their family safe, the defendan t was left with little choice and had to commit the offense. In conclusion, the defenses discussed in this paper have been play down in any courtrooms in the United States.

The Price For Death Penalty Essays - Capital Punishment, Penology

The Price For Death Penalty Costs of the Death Penalty. James Wheeler 3/6/00 Government 400.3 The Costs of the Death Penalty in the United States Capital punishment has existed in the US since colonial times. Since then, more than 13,000 people have been legally executed. Today, there are only twelve states which do not have the death penalty: Alaska, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin, as well as Washington D.C. The locations of these states are important because they illustrate the lack of ideological homogeneity usually associated with geographical regions of the US. The methods of execution are as varied as their locations. The word capital in capital punishment refers to a persons head, as, historically, execution was performed by cutting off the head. Today, there are generally five methods of execution used in the US. Hanging, the gas chamber, lethal injection, the electric chair and the firing squad are all used, some notably less than others. I n 1930, the Bureau of Justice Statistics began keeping stats on capital punishment nationwide. From 1930 until 1967, 3859 people were executed in the US, 3334 for murder (www. uaa). Thats an average of almost 105 people per year, three out of five of which were executed in the South. By 1967, all but ten states had laws for capital punishment. Nationally, strong pressure was steadily placed on the federal government by those opposed to capital punishment which resulted in an unofficial moratorium on executions until 1976. Officially, the Supreme Court ruled capital punishment unconstitutional in 1972. In Furman v. Georgia,408 U.S. 238 (1972), a 5-4 Supreme Court decision ruled that CP laws in their present form were arbitrary and capricious and constituted cruel and unusual punishment in violation of the Eighth Amendment as well as due process of the Fourteenth Amendment (www.aclu). In its decision, the Court voted that the death penalty statutes were vague and ambiguous, providing little guidance to juries in deciding whether to apply the death penalty. This caused states which still wanted the death penalty to revise their legislation to satisfy the Supreme Courts objection to the arbitrary nature of execution. State governments tried two new strategies to be more specific and direct in death penalty trials: guided discretion and the mandatory death penalty. In Gregg v. Georgia, 428 U.S. 153 (1976) among others, the Supreme Court gave sentencing courts the right to impose sentences of death for specific crimes and allowed a two-stage (bifurcated) trial (www.cpa). In the first stage, the guilt or innocence of the defendant is established, while in the second stage, the jury or the judge (depending on the state) determines the sentence. Mandatory death penalty for specific crimes, on the other hand, was deemed unconstitutional because of cases such as Woodson v. North Carolina, 428 U.S. 280 (1976). These rulings lead to the modification of each states statutes regarding the death penalty (www.uaa). The moratorium ended and executions resumed in January 1977. Capital punishment remains, as it ahs always been, controversial and heavily debated on both philosophical (moral) grounds as well as on a strictly financial basis. Both sides, however, seem to be able to crunch the numbers and make their arguments in a way which supports their claims. Today, one of the major points of debate about the death penalty is that of cost. Some of those who support the death penalty defend it as a cost-effective alternative to life in prison. Those who oppose capital punishment conversely say that it costs a significant amount more to kill someone than to incarcerate them for life. What tends to occur is that advocates of the death penalty focus the debate on post trial costs, particularly incarceration, while opponents focus on the trial cost itself. Time Magazine (as of 12/95) found that, nationwide, the average cell cost is $24,000 per year and the avera ge maximum-security cell cost is $75,000 per year (www.prodeathpenalty). Illustrating how statistics are made to fit the agendas, the Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC), a leading anti- death penalty organization, claims that, in Texas, a state known for its liberal use of the death penalty, it would cost three times as much to execute

Sample of a GP Essay

Sample of a GP EssayWhen preparing your own essay for GP, here are a few samples of what you can expect. It is likely that your GP school will use a standardized essay assessment process in order to evaluate your skills. The type of test will depend on the field you are interested in and the duration of your studies at the college. I've included a sample of a standard essay below to show you what to expect. There are two types of essays that are used by the GP examination, GP A or GP B. In general, the duration of time that you will need to write a typical essay for GP varies. Some types of essays may take more time than others. When writing a GP essay, it is important to plan ahead. Make sure that you have time to review your ideas, so that you can edit the paper if necessary. To begin, there are five main topics that you will be expected to cover in your essay. These include the topic of the college, the topic of the school itself, your interests, and your personal experience. If you do not cover these topics in your essay, the college should be notified. These topics will also determine the order in which you are expected to answer the questions, and therefore the length of your essay. In order to earn your degree in this field, you will have to study the history of the United States, as well as many other topics related to the social sciences. There are generally three levels of schools, with the first level being the Master's degree. Once you earn your Master's degree, you are considered a post-baccalaureate student. Therefore, in most cases, you will only need to write a Post-Master's level essay. The first sample of a GP essay is one where you are reviewing your favorite subjects. This is a great example of the type of essay that you can expect to receive. When you choose to review your favorite subjects, you must know what it is that you love about the subject. This is important to note because it is imperative that you get into the mentality of the reader. You should write an essay that not only explains the subject matter but also shows the reader why you love it.When you receive your GP essay, you should prepare a critique letter. This is a letter that summarizes the topics and points that you find to be faulty in your essay. You may want to write something like this, but you should feel free to add your own thoughts and feelings. It is also important to realize that you are not required to keep this critique under twenty pages. The next sample of a GP essay is one where you look at your knowledge of the major social science areas. This is probably the most common of the topics that are covered in a typical GP essay. The topics include politics, psychology, philosophy, economics, and sociology. You should be aware that this particular sample of a GP essay is not very long, so you will likely only have a few paragraphs to describe what you know about these topics.

Conclusion....................................................................Page 4 D. References............................................................Page 6 As more and more companies go online these days, they need more and more ways to advertise their products and services. The most popular method, unfortunately, is the use of pop-up advertising. For those of you reading who are not in the know, a pop-up ad is an advertisement that appears on the computer screen out of nowhere, mostly when the pop-up victim is surfing the internet, but sometimes they will appear when the victim is not surfing the internet at all. They appear on my computer when Im not even there, but enough of my life story. Lets get back to the issue at hand. Love them or hate them, pop-up ads are here to stay. The majority of todays internet users are doing everything in their power to stop them, but somehow pop-up ads are still an effective advertising tool, so they cannot be stopped just yet. To understand the reasoning behind this, one has to see the issues from a consumers viewpoint as well as a businessmans viewpoint. Most consumers want to do away with pop-up ads, as do many businesses. However, several businesses make the bulk of their income with pop-up ads. Assuming whoever reads this is most likely a consumer who does not like pop-up ads, I will start by discussing this viewpoint and far people will go to stop pop-up ads. I am one of these consumers that wishes pop-up ads would di...

Discussion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 10

Discussion - Essay Example Particularly in special education, the importance of curriculum increases manifolds. I remain very prudent in designing the curriculum and consult other teachers to make it the best. A teacher has to simultaneously address the needs of students coming from different backgrounds, cultures, religions, regions, and ethnicities. Taking this into consideration, a special educator needs to be very flexible in his/her approach as his/her intended way may not suit all of the students at the same time. I know quite a lot of languages and tend to teach a student in his/her mother tongue (if I know that) when he/she is finding difficulty grabbing the concept otherwise. In order to be popular among the students, a teacher should promote diversity in every possible way. Interpersonal and communication skills which happen to be the fourth attribute as identified by (Hughes and George-Walter) are indeed, the most important competencies in context of special education. When I appreciate the good work of students, they feel honored which raises their morale and self esteem so that they remain consistent in their hard work. Likewise, I remain very prudent while being strict with a student because if the strictness goes beyond the limit, it can have adverse impact on the child. Creativity and innovation in pedagogy is essential for making the lectures interesting and improving the ambiance of the educational environment. I keep looking into journals, newspapers, magazines and other sources of information to learn new ideas and techniques to make the lecture interesting. For example, when I feel the students are fed up of the blackboard teaching, I tend to shift towards moving image for teaching them. Innovation in pedagogical can be achieved with adequate use of technology (Sharples). †¦[IT] (ie technology) basically opens up a whole world of learning for everybody, you know. You can find, up, read up, on anything you want, like in a university

System Evaluation Essay Example for Free

System Evaluation Essay One of the most prevalent and effective systems used within the Marine Corps is the human resources system known as Marine Online (MOL). MOL was created to track Marines annual training, allow special requests such as leave, liberty, temporary duty assignments, personal time away from duty. MOL also gives Marines the ability to track carrier progression through annual reporting and rewards that are posted. The system includes promotion tracking and allows one to calculate physical training scores such as physical fitness training scores and combat fitness-training scores. The system allows Marines to track pay and leave in incremental amounts allowing one to view pay 15 days prior to being paid. The need for the system has been ever present and before its implementation everything was stored on paper and word of mouth. The system has helped the Corps as a whole because it creates a platform for many different types of data to be stored and calculates data automatically allowing data to be requested at a moment notice. The requirements of the Marine Corps that drove the system development of MOL are many in number but the need that drove the creation of it the most was how large the organization is. The Marine Corps size can vary from 200k to 400k including reserves. Commanders needed a system that would allow them to view leave and performance reports at a moments notice. In the process of creating the system they found there were many other facets of records they could include in the system. By digitizing these records they would be viewable by every Marine. This in turn allowed the Marine Corps to save hundreds of millions of dollars because they could reduce the number of departments. The Marine Corps had the ability to centralize all of the departments and reduce the amount of paper waste along with wasted man hours. In the past Marines would have to go to several separate departments to view the same information. The original system was only created to track only two areas of information. When the Marine Corps did their assessment of the system they found it to be so helpful they asked commanders if there was anything else they could add to the system to make it easier to track Marines carrier and allow individuals the ability to do the same. Allowing the individual Marines the ability to view these reports at a moments notice has allowed the organization as a whole to appeal to a much higher standard and expectation of the Marines. An example of a new tool that has been implemented in the system MOL is in the Marine Times â€Å"Use of the new communications tool, accessible through Marine Online, or MOL, will be mandatory for nearly the entire Corps by the end of February. † (Sanborn, 2011, para. 2). The use of this new communication tool has allowed family’s to stay in contact with loved ones while deployed over seas. The new system has improved almost every facet of the organization the basic use of the Marine Online System is to allow tracking of Marines to the commanders in the Marines Corps with the simple click of a mouse. The system has grown to so much more than it was originally created for allowing the growth of the Marine Corps in many other areas. Some likely future developments of the system will be the incorporation of medical and dental records. The system will probably be updated to include service record books to allow Marines individual records to be recorded electronically. The information system will eventually grow to allow every Marine to track every portion of their carrier to include new functions that were never though possible or never thought were needed. Something that has not been incorporated into the system is a mobile aspect but in the near future there will be. â€Å"In 2011, the Department of Defense announced it was creating a special online app store for members of the military so that they could download mobile apps that had been vetted for security issues† (Turban, Volonino, Wood, 2013, p. 88). Security has always been an issue for the Department of Defense (DOD) when creating mobile portions of their information systems. This is something that has repressed their ability to expand into the mobile business as of late the security of mobile system has become ever stronger and allowed the DOD to expand its information systems. Conclusion The MOL system has transformed how the Marine Corps functions in many different ways. The IS has allowed the organization as a whole to reduce aste and streamline the data it collects to a central location. Requirements of the system have always been present within the organization until recently has not been reasonably attainable with the amount of employees within the organization. The ultimate drive of the system is unit readiness and the unit readiness is easily quantifiable within the system because the commanders within the Marine Corps have instant access to the information required to gauge it. Unit readiness is the ability to leave at a moments notice when called upon by the president or congress to deploy to a war zone. The type and basic uses of the system are some of the most essential parts of the IS. Without the basic use of this system the Marine Corps as a whole would be at a loss without the use of it. In essence the application of this system has changed the business processes of the Marine Corps as a whole.

The Three Spirits in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol Essay -- English Liter

The Three Spirits in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol In Dickens’ Ghost story ‘ A Christmas Carol’ we are shown a story of redemption. Dickens uses description, sarcasm and many other effects to create the sudden changes of atmosphere in the novel. I will look at how Dickens creates such a structured book and what causes it to be so effective. However before I begin to examine Dickens’ methods I will see how each of the mysterious spirits affect Scrooge and how he responds to them. Ebenezer Scrooge is a miser if ever there was one - grasping and covetous, rich and penny-pinching. Dickens describes how he keeps a clerk, Bob Cratchit, on a measly fifteen shillings a week and a very small fire. His only family, a nephew named Fred, tries to get him to spend Christmas with him and Scrooge's only reply is "Bah. Humbug." The name Scrooge itself sounds sinister in itself†¦ His name screw + gouge shows he is hard -hearted. He is visited by four spirits. The first is of his former partner, Jacob Marley, who arrives on Christmas Eve. Jacob tells him he made his chain link by link and his spirit is condemned to walk the earth desperately trying to help his fellow man to no avail. He tells Scrooge their last hope is to be visited by three Ghosts - the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. Scrooge dismisses his vision, saying "there's more of gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are" and goes to sleep. Scrooge is redeemed because he learns how to let his spirit walk among his fellow men. He shows this by becoming 'a better man, a better master' as the good old city ever knew. He reveals his progress slowly by his actions, reactions and emotions. ... ...th the discovery that many think him a monster of a man. Scrooge finds most out about himself from this Spirit, and mixes his joy with his remorse and pain. The Spirit of Christmas Yet to Come is perhaps the least accessible character, but the line â€Å"the kind hand trembled† right at the end of its visit shows that it has goodwill. Its lack of violence and terror impresses Scrooge further. It must put the finishing touches to Scrooge, ensuring he is aware of his own mortality and to encourage him to change his life for the good. Scrooge’s dream is a growing process, starting from the one extreme of an old boring humble miser, and finishing up as a model of goodwill and religious generosity. Charles Dickens achieves what he attempted to do. With the use of humorous words and fantastic Ghosts he tells us a deep moral story which is still relevant today.

As of June 2, 2012 there are 214 stores across 90 cities and towns in India covering around 16 million sq. ft. of retail space.Big Bazaar is designed as an agglomeration of bazaars or Indian markets with clusters offering a wide range of merchandise including fashion and apparels, food products, general merchandise, furniture, electronics, books, fast food and leisure and entertainment sections. Big Bazaar is part of  Future Group, which also owns the  Central Hypermarket,  Brand Factory,  Pantaloons, eZONE, HomeTown, futurebazaar. com, KB's Fair Price to name a few and is owned through a wholly owned subsidiary of  Pantaloon Retail India  Limited. History:- Big Bazaar was launched in September, 2001 with the opening of its first four stores in  Calcutta,  Indore,  Bangalore  and  Hyderabad  in 22 days. Within a span of ten years, there are now 161 Big Bazaar stores in 90 cities and towns across India. By September 2012 BIG BAZAAR will have two more stores in North east namely SILCHAR and JORHAT in Assam.Big Bazaar was started by  Kishore Biyani, the Group CEO and Managing Director of  Pantaloon Retail India. Though Big Bazaar was launched purely as a fashion format including apparel, cosmetics, acc essory and general merchandise, over the years Big Bazaar has included a wide range of products and service offerings under their retail chain. The current formats includes Big Bazaar, Food Bazaar, Electronic Bazaar and Furniture Bazaar. The inspiration behind this entire retail format was from  Saravana Stores, a local store in  T. Nagar,  Chennai The stores are customized to provide the feel of mandis and melas  [2]  while offering the modern retail features like Quality, Choice and Convenience. As the modern Indian family's favorite retail store, Big Bazaar is popularly known as the â€Å"Indian  Walmart†. On successful completion of ten years in Indian retail industry, in 2011, Big Bazaar has come up a new logo with a new tag line: ‘Naye India Ka Bazaar’, replacing the earlier one: ‘Isse Sasta Aur Accha Kahin Nahin'. [3] Strategy:- 3-C Theory According to  Kishore Biyani's 3-C theory, Change and Confidence among the entire population is lea ding to rise in Consumption, through better employment and income which in turn is creating value to the agricultural products across the country. [4]  Big Bazaar has divided India into three segments: India one: Consuming class which includes upper middle and lower middle class (14% of India's population).India two: Serving class which includes people like drivers, household helps, office peons, liftmen, washermen, etc. (55% of India's population) and India three: Struggling class (remaining 31% of India's population). While Big Bazaar is targeted at the population across India one and India two segments, Aadhaar Wholesale is aimed at reaching the population in India three segment. With this,  Future Groupemerged as a retail destination for consumers across all classes in the Indian society. Operations:- Most Big Bazaar stores are multi-level and are located in stand-alone buildings in city centers as well as within shopping malls. These stores offer over 200,000 SKUs in a wide range of categories led primarily by fashion and food products.Food Bazaar, a supermarket format was incorporated within Big Bazaar in 2002 and is now present within every Big Bazaar as well as in independent locations. A typical Big Bazaar is spread across around 50,000 square feet (4,600  m2) of retail space. While the larger metropolises have Big Bazaar Family centres measuring between 75,000 square feet (7,000  m2) and 160,000 square feet (15,000  m2), Big Bazaar Express stores in smaller towns measure around 30,000 square feet (2,800  m2). Big Bazaar has the facility to purchase products online through its official web page, and offers free shipping on some of their products. [5] Innovations:- Wednesday bazaar:- Big Bazaar introduced the Wednesday Bazaar concept and promoted it as â€Å"Hafte Ka Sabse Sasta Din†.It was mainly to draw customers to the stores on Wednesdays, when least number of customers are observed. According to the chain, the aim of the concept is â€Å"to give home makers the power to save the most and even the stores in the city don a fresh look to make customers feel that it is their day†.
